FAILS THE SECOND ATTEMPT TO CLOSE THE OIL WELL IN THE GULF OF MEXICO
Sunday May 9, 2010
The project to seal the well in a controlled manner by a large bell of
steel and cement has also failed due to the formation of crystals that
clog the top of the dome, where technicians thought start pumping more
oil controlled
as reported by the company British Petroleum (BP)
The subsea well was opened after the explosion of the platform and in
the early stages of BP treated by ROV (underwater robots) to close the
hole, but all these first steps and failed.
While expectations are low, the operations of this second project
would not have been completed and the company remains in the attempt
to seal the leakage point with the great bell of 100 tons, produced
especially for this work, has said in press conference
The BP chief operating officer, Doug Suttles.
The spill has already reached some points of the U.S. coast is
estimated at 800,000 liters per day the amount of oil that is dumped
on the seabed about 1,500 meters deep.
The operations of this great depth are very complex and fall into an
experimental field since they have never done before.
The problems for the control of the flight with the dome are the
result of hydrogen crystals formed at low temperatures, high pressure
that exists at that depth and the presence of natural gas.
The company BP is already working on a third project with the rapid
drilling of a well parallel in seeking to inject a thick substance
that plugs the output of crude oil.
Some experts estimate at 31 million liters of oil spill volume since
the beginning of the spill on 22 April in Deepwater platform due to a
huge explosion and subsequent collapse of the plant where 11 workers
were missing the
Transocean company and is now presumed dead.
The causes of this accident are currently unknown and those
responsible for the company BP have not addressed the reasons for the
event.
Some U.S. media cited a report from the company points to a large
bubble of gas that burned to get to the surface.
A contractor for diving operations found remains of great depth of one
or two fishing boats in the vicinity of the accident but the Coast
Guard did not have any information about missing or sunken vessels in
the area.
In continuing the work surface to reduce toxic consequences of the oil
and it hosts many different performances as chemical treatment or the
installation of barriers.
Dispersants break the composition of crude oil, which sinks and
collects in the bottom where it kills marine life.
The effects of these products used on a large scale are unknown and
the damage to the ecosystem and are priceless in an area of great
diversity.
