A platform of Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) sank in the Caribbean
Sea causing no casualties and no risk to the marine environment,
according to initial reports from authorities.
Chavez himself gave the first details of the event through your
Twitter account @ chavezcandanga "With regret I inform you that
the platform sank Aban Pearl gas-bearing few moments ago. The good
news is that 95 workers safe," 03.11 local time (0741
GMT) on Twitter
The plant, completely sunk about 8 miles from the coast and was
well off the Dragon 6.
The platform operating at the time of the sinking to 155 meters
deep and sank at 2.00 local time (0630 GMT)
Aban Pearl was built in 1977 and had a capacity to operate at
1,250 feet deep (381 m).
The facility provided by Petromarine, signature associated with
the Indian company Aban Offshore, installed in the area just a
year ago, was drilled some 16 wells in the Mariscal Sucre gas
project's most advanced country.
The authorities say that there is no danger to the marine
environment because the well was closed for security mechanisms,
although the installation went down with 8600 barrels of fuel oil
used as fuel for its own operations.
The platform Aban Pearl is the responsibility of the Singapore
company Petromarine Energy Services and was presented as a symbol
of progress in the energy industry by being the first Venezuelan
offshore facility operated by PDVSA
Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez said at the time of the accident
triggered the safety valves and an additional security system,
which allows us to confirm that the situation in the well is
stable and there is no risk of leakage.
The minister said the accident had been caused by the flooding of
the pontoons that supported the platform and the owner of the
facility studies the turnaround.
PDVSA president Rafael Ramirez also said the incident and will not
alter the plans of the Mariscal Sucre gas project in the
Venezuelan coast, and a new platform will operate in two months.
This event occurs a few weeks of the sad accident on the
platform's Deepwater BP with the disappearance of 11 workers and
has produced one of the largest oil spill in U.S. history and
there is no solution today to close
a well.
The Venezuelan minister visited Aban Pearl platform last week to
celebrate the completion of the preliminary tests at a ceremony
presented on state television by Chávez himself.
Ramirez informed the media that the workers were evacuated but the
captain and two engineers remained on the ground until they jumped
into the sea waiting for the rescue, adding that it will create a
commission of inquiry and work in the area
an ROV.
